East meets West to combine for the fastest overall group in the history of Powerboat's 100-mph roundup.

Have you gone 100 mph in a performance boat?

If you say no, don't sweat it—you're in the majority. Most performance-boat lovers will never see that kind of speed, because most performance boats can't get there. Sure, you read about boats all the time in this magazine that can run 100 mph and well beyond, but they do not make up the majority of the existing go-fast fleet.

Just as the boats you'll read about in this roundup do not represent the majority of the boats we test. Truth be told, every boat in this roundup was set up—no big surprise here—for top speed. Most often, however, is that these models leave their respective plants geared for all-around performance. That usually means significantly lower top speeds and less power, which also translates to a lower purchase price, and a more conservative setup in terms of lower drive heights and smaller-pitch propellers.

But that's not the way the 14 builders from the East and West coasts delivered their blazing boats to this shootout. By the time the spray had settled on the Colorado River in Parker, Ariz., and Sarasota Bay in Sarasota, Fla., we had the fastest fleet of catamarans and V-bottoms in the 11-year history of our 100-mph roundup. The slowest member of the group hit 100.5 mph, while the fastest entry ran 154 mph. The average top speed for the fleet was 120.6 mph.

That makes the remarkable boats you'll read about on the following pages—like the experience of running 100 mph—anything but average.
