Fountain Powerboats’ King of Shaves race boat dominated the Powerboat P1 circuit in Europe. Now it was time to let everyone in the United States know about it.
The race circuit presented the P1 Manufacturers World Championship Cup to Reggie Fountain along with the race team’s Craig Wilson and James Sheppard at the Miami International Boat Show. Ilmor Marine, which supplied the boat’s 625-horsepower engines, was also honored during the event at the Fountain booth.
“Racing is a big thing over there,” Fountain said. “They don’t have football, basketball, baseball or the X Games. They love the racing.”
After missing the first race of the season, King of Shaves had a remarkable showing on the tour. The team took nine of 13 top finishes in the 2007 season.
Heading into this year’s races, the team is using the same race boat with some minor modifications to the hull. Ilmor is supplying new MV-10 625 engines for the boat, the previous set are going to another team on the circuit.
Ilmor Marine President Paul Ray said he has been impressed with the quality of racing on the European tour.
“I think Craig (Wilson) said it best, you’re treated like a real competitor and you’re part of an event,” Ray said. “From the minute we arrived, we were welcomed with open arms.”
The Powerboat P1 tour kick off its 2008 season in Italy this May.
