San Diego’s Thunderboat Regatta Adds Marketing Firm PDF Print E-mail

hydro1.jpgA marketing group led by Unlimited hydroplane driver and owner Ken Muscatel has been brought in to help promote the Thunderboat Regatta slated for Sept. 19-21 in San Diego.

The hydroplane race has been taking place for 42 years on the waters of Mission Bay, and according to organizers, is one of the larger tourism draws for the city of San Diego.

Thunderboats Unlimited, a nonprofit group that organizes and produces the race, turned to Muscatel’s group to increase sponsorship dollars and help with the promotion of the event.

“The people that produce Thunderboats put on a great production,” said Bart Leland, representative for Thunderboats. “They’re very good at it. They’re passionate enthusiasts and now they’re being paired with marketing professionals.

“What Ken (Muscatel) did was see the potential to organize. These guys as drivers and businessmen didn’t want the race to go away. He has a vision of what this could be.”

Muscatel said of the relationship, “This partnership has a fortified commitment to continue and expand the vision Bill Muncey had from the beginning, to bring the best in boat racing and family entertainment to Mission Bay for years to come.”

The cup and racecourse in San Diego was named after the great racer Bill Muncey, who died during a race in Acapulco in 1981.
