The first event of the boating season for Southern California Offshore Powerboat Elite (SCOPE) was a huge success with 20 performance boats gathered in Catalina to celebrate the annual Avalon Spring Fling.
Boaters departed from all over Southern California to meet up with their friends and families for a weekend of boating, golf, diving and a Saturday night barbeque at Descanso Beach. The dinner was followed by dancing late into the night.
With 200-plus members, SCOPE was founded in January 1992 by Ron
Songrath as a way to bring families and friends in the boating
community together. The club has 13 of their own events slated for 2008
and five other events on their calendar that they attend as a group
such as the Desert Storm Poker Run in Lake Havasu, Ariz., the Miami to
Key West poker run and the Miami International Boat Show.
Described by board member Lu Lyall as the “pinnacle event” of the year,
the club hosts its annual poker run Sept. 26 and 27. The poker run goes
to Catalina Island and back to the mainland. This year SCOPE will
celebrate the 15th running of the poker run and it should be a fun time.
