Offshore Super Series PDF  | Print |  E-mail

In 2003 when the Offshore Super Series (OSS) was formed, it would have seemed unlikely—at best—that the new racer-owned series would team ever team up with Super Boat International (SBI). That’s no slight to SBI, but at the time OSS leadership placed a high priority on controlling its own destiny.

10preview_ossWhat a difference seven years—and a shrinking race boat fleet exacerbated by fragmentation and accelerated by a miserable economy—can make. Now OSS and SBI are teaming up to co-produce and organize several events. Unity is a good thing.

“We’re doing joint races with SBI, and everyone is welcome,” said Ellen Greenleaf of OSS. “Mike Tomlinson, our chief referee, put together a new rulebook this year to get the rules closer together with P1, SBI and OPA.”

Greenleaf added that safety remains the organization’s top priority.

“The reason OSS was formed in 2003 was to promote safety as much as we can in the sport,” she said. “That’s why we have the top safety diver teams in the world. That’s why we promote dunker training. Our teams that have been in accidents credit our simulator training for their coming out of them safely.

“As always, our focus is promoting offshore racing in the United States and around the world,” she continued. “We’re focused on bringing offshore racing to the fans and to get the sport out there.”
